Aomori Prefecture’s location
Located to the east of the Asian Continent, Japan consists of four major islands (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu), and small islands around them.
Aomori prefecture is in the northernmost part of Honshu Island, at almost the same latitude as New York and Rome.

Of the world’s area of 135.641 million km², Japan’s area accounts for 0.28%, approximately 377,000 km².
Japan has the 60th largest area among 192 countries in the world, and its area is approximately one forty-fifth of Russia’s area, and one twenty-fifth of Canada’s area, China’s area and the US’s area respectively.
Aomori Prefecture’s area is 9,606.83 km², the eighth largest prefecture in Japan. Forests account for almost 70% of the entire area of the prefecture.

As of October 1, 2005, Aomori Prefecture’s population is 1,436,628 (according to the census).The prefecture has the 28th largest population among prefectures in the country, and the third largest population after Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures among six prefectures in the Tohoku region.

Aomori Prefecture has a cold climate. In winter, moist air hitting mountains bring snow, and in summer, areas along the Pacific Ocean sometimes have days of low-temperature because of easterly winds (called yamase).

How to use the Welcome Card
- The Welcome Card may be used by foreign tourists and visitors whose duration of stay does not exceed one year, and foreign students based in the Northern Tohoku area (Aomori, Akita, and Iwate Prefecture).
- The Welcome Card is valid for cardholders only, and not for their accompanying persons.
- The Welcome Card is valid for one year from the date of issuance. If the Welcome Card does not have the date of issuance, the cardholder should sign her or his name.
- The Welcome Card may be obtained by downloading from the site indicated below.
- The Welcome Card is valid only at participating facilities, indicated by the "Welcome Card Accepted Here" sticker.
- To use the Welcome Card, the cardholder will be requested to show her or his passport or a copy thereof (students may use their student IDs) at the time of use. The cardholder's cooperation is appreciated.
- The Welcome Card is applicable to only the special discounts and benefits listed on this site.
- When the Welcome Card is used for discounts on products and services from participating facilities, it cannot be used in addition to group discounts, credit card discounts, or other similar discount plans.
